Information:

Avinash originates from Fiji. He holds a masters degree in Marine Science from the University of the South Pacific (USP). He completed his thesis on larval rearing of fire-shrimp (Lysmata debelius), a marine ornamental cleaner shrimp in 2003. While working on his thesis he assisted Dr Alec Forbes and his team in breeding and larval rearing of the tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) at the Marine Studies Programme (MSP) Seawater Laboratory.

After graduating he went to work for Indian Ocean Aquaculture, a shrimp hatchery and farm in Mozambique for 6 months. He returned to join the Institute of Marine Resources (IMR) at USP as a Research Fellow. Avinash provided consultancy and training to farmers and other aquaculture ventures as well as managed a freshwater prawn hatchery.

Through IMR, he managed the Dairy Farms Fiji Aquaculture Unit to function as a commercially viable business for 6 years. During this period he worked mostly with the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii, but also with tilapia, grass and silver carps, as well as with the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium lar and the ornamental goldfish. He also underwent training and conducted trials with the marine Mexican blue shrimp (Litopenaeus stylirostris) at the MSP. Avinash continued to manage the farm under new management once it was sold to Tebara Farms Limited in December 2010 until he joined SPC.

During 2nd semester in 2008 Avinash coordinated and lectured for the undergraduate course in Aquaculture at USP. Prior to his masters degree Mr Singh was employed as a quality control at Ocean Trader Co. Ltd, a HACCP certified fish process and export company.

Avinash worked with SPC from October 2011 to late 2015 as the Aquaculture Officer under the European Union (EU) funded Increasing Agricultural Commodity Trade (IACT) project. His role focuses around development of medium- to large-scale private sector aquaculture ventures to increase exports or aid in import substitution by producing commodities within the Pacific region.
