Andrew joined FAME's Coastal fisheries Programme with a truly international flavour, having been born and raised in Papua New Guinea before spending time in Australia, the Middle East and the Western Pacific where he has developed a broad range of skills and experience around tropical reef systems. He has a PhD from James Cook University where he studied the effects of large-scale disturbances on coral reef fish communities along the tropical East and West coasts of Australia.

Prior to joining SPC in January 2018, Andrew was working for the Department of Parks and Wildlife in Western Australia, where he was the regional Marine Ecologist managing research and monitoring within the newly legislated Marine Parks system in the Kimberley region of WA. Working closely with the traditional owners to develop and undertake research and monitoring within such a magnificent wilderness area was a professional highlight. Before moving to WA in 2012, Andrew conducted applied research on coral reefs across Micronesia including marine protected area effectiveness, climate change effects on corals and population dynamics of heavily targeted reef fish.

As the Senior Coastal Fisheries Scientist at FAME Andrew has the lead role in providing timely and appropriate technical advice for coastal fisheries issues across all the Pacific Island Countries and Territories. As part of a multidisciplinary team in the Coastal Fisheries Unit, he helps PICTS develop appropriate management plans to support sustainable fisheries livelihoods in the region. A major part of this work is the continual development of capacity within individual countries through training and mentorship of individuals.
