Report on a bonefish sport fishing feasibility study on Aitutaki, Cook Islands
Aitutaki_Bonefish_coverA feasibility study was carried out as part of a strategic development plan for sport fishing in the Cook Islands, formulated in April 2009 by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and the Cook Islands Ministry of Marine Resources (MMR).

Herlé Hamon, the author of the report, together with local fishing guides and SPC’s Nearshore Fisheries Development Adviser, explored a dozen ‘flats’ either on foot or in MMR's boat, for a total of 25 hours of fishing. They also tested three ‘milks’ (or ‘muds’) for a total of five hours of fishing. During the week of prospecting, nine bonefish were caught and 20 more were hooked, most of which were lost due to the lines breaking in the coral heads.
